Welcome to my playthrough of _Godzilla (ゴジラ)_ (game region: Japan) – also called _King of the Monsters: Godzilla_ on the game box – for the Nintendo Family Computer (FC for short), commonly known as the Famicom, the Japanese equivalent of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

*– VIDEO INTRODUCTION –*

This playthrough shows:

• a no-death run of Planet X.

*NOTE¹:* I figured a playthrough where I beat the earlier stages and thus the easier enemy monsters – monsters are resurrected with more power in the later stages – would be boring, so I used a password – [as seen at 03:54] – to start on the last Ring Field, Planet X. But let me know (in the comments section below) if you want to see (one of) the other Ring Fields!

By the way, I got the password from the following YouTube video of _Godzilla: Monster of Monsters!_ by [@NintendoComplete] – [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQC_95PK5Is].

The timestamps for each fight against the various enemy monsters can be found in the comments section below (and not in the video description box due to the character limit).

*NOTE²:* On the Ring Field, Godzilla or Mothra can move more than one or two HEXes, respectively – [e.g., at 34:31]. (And sometimes the opposite is true and Mothra is allowed to move only one HEX!) However, the exact criteria for this to happen are unknown to me. If you do know, please tell me (in the comments section below)!

*– GAME PATCH(ES) –*

English Translation
Released By: Stardust Crusaders
Patch Version: 1.0

The game is modified with an English translation patch. It can be downloaded from ROMhacking.net at – [http://www.romhacking.net/translations/2894/].

I am not sure if the garbled graphics – [at 03:33] – is an error on my part or the fault of the translation patch.

*– GAME OVERVIEW –*

_Godzilla_ for the Famicom is a side-scrolling beat 'em up/shoot 'em up (shmup). It was developed by Compile and published by Toho Cinefile-Soft Library. The game was released in Japan on December 9, 1988.

• The international versions of _Godzilla_ were released as _Godzilla: Monster of Monsters!_ in North America in October 1989 and in Europe in 1991.
◦ There are several differences between the Japanese and international versions, including the following:
- the international versions remove all references to Compile and Toho Cinefile-Soft Library, crediting the game to Toho instead;
- the Japanese version uses unique music tracks for the title and intro screens, which were removed in the international versions (probably due to licensing issues, as both songs are based on compositions by Akira Ifukube from the Godzilla movies);
- changes to the Ring Fields and other gameplay elements, such as doubling Godzilla's and Mothra's map movement to two and four HEXes, respectively, in the international versions.

• In _Godzilla,_ the mysterious Planet X appears and its inhabitants attempt to conquer Earth, using a legion of space monsters as their primary attack force (though some of the creatures are from Earth). The King of Monsters, Godzilla, joins forces with the Guardian Monster, Mothra, to repel the invading forces.
◦ The main space monsters (and their corresponding planets) are:
- Gezora (Earth)
- Moguera (Earth)
- Varan (Varan)
- Hedorah (Jupiter)
- Baragon (Saturn)
- Gigan (Uranus)
- Mechagodzilla (Pluto)
- Ghidorah (Planet X)

• North America got a sequel to _Godzilla: Monster of Monsters!_ called _Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters_ (1992).
