Gran Turismo 2 - Dreamcast - PlayStation game running via Bleem, Intro, Gameplay & Comparison [4K]
Real hardware capture of Bleemcast in action on the Dreamcast this is the disc for Gran Turismo 2 which allows the PS1 disc to run on the SEGA console. Ground breaking at the time, Bleem didn't last long as Sony were quick to get their lawyer involved and in the end the project was shutdown.
Only three games officially supported it and each had their own disc needed in order to run, the three games were Gran Turismo 2, Metal Gear Solid and Tekken 3. In this video we take a look at the PAL version of Gran Turismo 2 running on a PAL Dreamcast. Intro and gameplay from the arcade disc showing a race from each mode and car class. Bleem uses visual smoothing to improve the quality of the visuals for the Dreamcast and the end result is very impressive.
While the emulation may not be 100% perfect, unlike many other early emulators it is very very closes and many would argue that the improvements make it better to play than on the PS1 itself. Drawback include control issues with the games unable to use analogue control of PS1 and the Dreamcast controller lack the same number of buttons. Instead the original digital setup is use with the d-pad being used for the missing button. It also required a VMU memory card set aside for just it. However it can save multiple Bleem games to it. Bleem had intended to sell a special controller and memory card unit, but these never went into production.
As for Gran Turismo 2 well it's an impressive competitive race games with tons of cars and tracks. While somewhat buggy in the early releases, it's easy to see why it was a popular game whne it released in the late 90s. While long surpassed by other games in the series it still remains a solid title if you want a racing game on the PS1. Ironically the Dreamcast didn't really have many games in the genre of real world drive only the mediocre SEGA GT. Speed Devils and Vanishing Point have some similar gameplay elements and are better games than SEGA GT they don't quite match as both are more arcade racers. So some might say The Real Driving Simulator on PS1 and Dreamcast is Gran Turismo 2.
Comparison at the end of the video is the PAL version of the game captured on a Dreamcast and a PlayStation 2 (PS2) with no extra features running. If you want to see how the GT Mode is on Bleem for Dreamcast head over to our video of it on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1552098696
