Grand Prix 4 (2002) - Every PC F1 Game
Grand Prix 4 by Microprose/Simergy/Infogrames, 2002.
Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix 4 featured a whole new 3D engine, with GPS modelled tracks adding another layer of authenticity.
1. Race Start (Monza): 0:00 There's a few z-fighting issues, such as the adverts on the gantry (on the left) at the start. Computer controlled cars behaver generally very well in most of the Grand Prix games, and here's no exception. I've kept the helmet effect turned on here (where I didn't in F1 World Grand Prix and WARM UP! as it obscured too much). The cockpit view in Grand Prix 4 feels markedly different to previous Grand Prix games, as it has a different focal length, which may make the game feel a bit slower, but more realistic potentially.
2. Spray Effects (Silverstone): 0:34 This is meant to be a complete downpour, but it does look a little too bright and vibrant. Spray effects die off quickly (per car), and the raindrops-on-the-camera effect is a bit much/unrealistic. Note how there's dry track underneath the bridge, as with Grand Prix 3.
3. Tunnel & View (Monaco): 0:48 Monaco looks glorious in Grand Prix 4. The only minor glitch is some of the distant skyscrapers appear to be floating on the backdrop (pause it to see it!).
4. Wet Track (Spa-Francorchamps): 1:04 The legendary wet weather effects of the Grand Prix 3 games are improved here. Only a reduced fog effect makes it feel a bit too easy to see, given it's a downpour! Helmet raindrop effects add a nice effect.
5. Pitstop (Interlagos): 1:25 Pitstops in Grand Prix 4 are great. It's the first time in the Grand Prix series where you can have an entire pitstop from behind-the-car (or any other view). The pitcrew is particularly well modelled and animated (although the fuel hose doesn't connect to anything) and apparently they can even make time-costing mistakes!
6. Huge Crash (Montreal): 1:45 Crashes in Grand Prix 4 were legendary, with many parts breaking off cars, which can then be hit by other cars, damaging them! Here you can see whole sidepods going flying (not that they're that tough in real life!). There's also some brave/stupid marshalling going on!
