The controversial character of Trevor Philips is often described as Rockstar's attempt at personifying the anti-social traits which so many GTA players exhibit in-game, but at its core I believe the developer's long-established pessimism about human nature is a more important factor at work here. The thing about Trevor is that he's a diehard romantic, and it's precisely this complete lack of ironic detachment that makes him so destructive and dangerous. He's not just self-obsessed and narcissistic, which even the jaded and weary Michael could easily be accused of. No, what makes Trevor truly stand apart is that he has a fundamentalist belief in the utmost importance of his own feelings, and that the extraordinary value he places on concepts such as loyalty and friendship ensures that no price is ever too high to pay (for him or for anyone else). Although Trevor is frequently played for laughs in the course of the game's story, his character ultimately represents the developer's most emphatic argument yet against the dangers of taking oneself too seriously.
