Here's an omni-directional microphone I built for vlogging and podcasting stuff on YouTube
14This video is demonstrating the sound of a DIY self build microphone. The build is based on a BM-800 microphone that's been re-built and modified to be an omni-directional ECM microphone.
I chose to make an omni-directional studio microphone as I've never found an omni only mic in what would typically be identify as a studio mic. I've seen pencil condensers that are omni and indeed own a few and I've also owned many typical large diaphragm studio condensers that have an omni-directional polar pattern as part of a selection of pick up patterns but never seen am omni-directional only large diaphragm typical studio mic.
Now, while the end result here is not a large diaphragm mic because I'm only using a 10mm omni-directional ECM microphone capsule, that being a Primo EM272. The point of this mic build and modification was to make a simple omni-directional YouTube vlogging podcast mic that has the same appearance as a typical large diaphragm studio condenser mic.
What do you think of the sound of this microphone? I actually like it because it isn't as subject to a lot of the problems associated with a cardioid microphone, such as close proximity and plosive distortion and wind distortion. I think an omni-directional YouTube mic, or omni-directional vlogging podcast mic is a really good idea for close mic'ing and for certain recording scenarios.
