*– VIDEO INTRODUCTION –*
To trigger the (only working) hidden power-up in _Vs. Mach Rider,_ the player must complete a sector after destroying exactly three blue Oil Drums on the side of the road and filling the (invisible) shot meter to at least 180. (The meter starts at 80, decreasing by 2 each time a shot is fired and increasing by 16 when an enemy is run into an obstacle.)
This power-up gives Mach Rider a blue/red color and partial invincibility: most hazards no longer affect them – except blue Oil Drums, Bomber Balls or being rammed by an enemy at low speed – and they cannot slip.
(Unfortunately, the "Unlimited Ammo/Continuous Fire" and "Super Bullets" power-ups are not available in _Vs. Mach Rider.)_
Any garbled graphics you may notice are due to the emulator I use (the MAME core in BizHawk).
Because _Vs. Mach Rider_ is not found in YouTube's video game database, I left the "Game title (optional)" field empty. This causes YouTube to incorrectly add _Mach Rider_ as the game title for the video.
*– GAME OVERVIEW –*
_Vs. Mach Rider_ for the Vs. System is a third-person motorcycle combat video game. The game was developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. It was released in North America in November 1985 and in Japan in 1985.
The Vs. System is a video game arcade (AC) platform based on much of the same hardware as the Nintendo Family Computer (FC), commonly known as the Famicom, the Japanese equivalent of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
• _Vs. Mach Rider_ is a port of _Mach Rider (マッハライダー)_ (1985).
• The _Vs. Mach Rider_ arcade cabinet comes in two different versions, the _Fighting Course Version_ and the _Endurance Course Version._
◦ In the _Fighting Course Version,_ the player travels through ten sectors, trying to avoid being destroyed by obstacles and enemies.
◦ In the _Endurance Course Version,_ the player must race a certain number of miles within a time limit, while enemies and obstacles get in the way.
• _Vs. Mach Rider_ takes place in the year 2112, and Earth has been invaded by evil forces driving vehicles known as "Quadrunners". The player controls Mach Rider, who travels from sector to sector on a high-powered superbike, searching for survivors and destroying any enemies in their path.
◦ Each time the player completes a sector, an image of a woman holding a dagger will gradually appear next to the superbike. It remains unclear whether she represents Mach Rider's true identity. (There are official sources suggesting that Mach Rider is a woman, which would make her Nintendo's first female protagonist.)
