How I Got A Classic Nearly $800 Original NES Game For Under $40!
I love saving money while collecting video games; it makes me feel like I am getting away with something. Dating back to when I bought my Retron5 in 2015, I've loved adding Japanese Famicom, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, and other import games to my collection. The Retron5 made it easy because Hyperkin designed a Famicom slot into the system, and on my NES I can do the same thing with a 60-to-72 pin adapter. There are a number of games that were either released late in the NES' life, that they didn't make many of, or just games that they produced a ton more in Japan. Let's take a look at 4 games and how much the US NES Versions sell for compared to the Japanese Famicom Verisons, and How I Got A Classic Nearly $800 Original NES Game For Under $40!
Mighty Final Fight
Nintendo Entertainment System: $320
Famicom: $44
First up is Mighty Final Fight. This is a great game, with fantastic music and character work. I regret not grabbing it when I saw it on the NES for under $150 back in 2018—now it goes for a lot more. If you're a fan of the Final Fight series, this is an absolute must-have for your collection.
Ducktales 2
Nintendo Entertainment System: $226
Famicom: $47
I'm kind of glad I don't own DuckTales 2 on the NES. The first game is far superior, and this sequel doesn't justify its high price tag, which is only so expensive because it's rare.
Bucky O'Hare
Nintendo Entertainment System: $141
Famicom: $112
Then there's Bucky O'Hare. This classic Konami game is a blast, and if you watched the cartoon, you'll feel right at home. It's expensive on the NES, but I was able to find a Japanese version for less than $100. It's almost the same game, but with a different cartridge. The prices are closer now then when I bought mine a few years ago, so if you don't want to mess with an adapter then the NES one might be the way to go.
Bonk's Adventure / FC Genjin
Nintendo Entertainment System: $790
Famicom: $34
My number one pick is FC Genjin on the Famicom (the Japanese version of Bonk's Adventure on the NES). This mascot for the TurboGrafx-16 also had an amazing port on the Famicom/NES. The NES version is now ridiculously expensive, but the Famicom version is much more affordable and plays almost as well as the TurboGrafx version. While the graphics aren't as sharp, it's still incredibly fun.
