These Games Are Labors Of Love. Some Are Just Laborious To Play
With it being Labor Day here in the USA, I wanted to focus on games that are labor related. No, I'm not talking about Power Wash Simulator or Job Simulator, but games that are true labors of love. Games that you can tell the developers poured love and attention to detail into these games, and it comes out of every ounce of the game. There are also those games where, you can tell there was labor that went into them, but they're just laborious to play. Like having to grind, games that are broken or buggy, or otherwise games that I had high hopes for and they ultimately let me down. Let's take a look at 6 games that fit into each of these categories.
Super Mario Odyssey:
This game is a true love letter to the 3D Mario series. The amount of moons to collect feels similar to the stars in Mario 64, and there are tons of callbacks to older games, like finding Yoshi on the castle roof.
WWE 2K18 (Nintendo Switch):
This game was a disaster on the original Switch. It had so many performance issues that it was essentially broken. The Nintendo Switch version plays much better on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, but the original was just unplayable.
Mario Kart 8/Mario Kart 8 Deluxe:
While its successor is out in Mario Kart World for the Switch 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still my go-to game. The driving feels better, the customization is deeper, and the overall gameplay is just superior.
Star Fox Zero (Wii U):
As much as I tried, as much as I liked Wii Remote waggle controls, I could not get through this game. It relied so heavily on the Wii U Gamepad's motion controls, and there was no way to bypass them. It made the game unplayable for me.
Super Mario All-Stars (25th Anniversary Edition):
This Wii collection is incredible. It includes Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, 3, and The Lost Levels, along with a soundtrack and a booklet. It’s a perfect tribute to the series.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild:
Shocker, I know. If you're new around here this is a hot take, but my hatred for Breath of the Wild is LEGENDARY. I just couldn't get into it. The crafting felt like a "Minecraft with a Zelda skin," and after 40 hours, my Switch got bricked and I lost all my progress. I haven't gone back since.
What are some games that were a labor of love for you? What about games that were just a chore to get through? Let me know in the comments below!
