In this demonstration, I show you how I structure a new work. In my experience, structure is the most arduous part of the composition process. I usually begin with kick and bass before proceeding to the harmony and embellishments.

My approach to structure isn't always linear. I usually begin with the first and last sections of the piece, then flesh out the middle, though this depends on the material I have set before me.

Structuring a piece can take from a day to several weeks. While I'm intuitive, I find that I continuously reassess structure. If the structure isn't there, the work suffers. Structure precedes instrumentation. My music usually includes a percussion section, bass, harmony, embellishments, and melody. In recent years, I have reserved melody for last.
