How to Add Hotkeys to OBS to Start or Stop Recording (Easy Tutorial)
2Setting up hotkeys in OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) for starting or stopping recording is a great way to streamline your workflow. Here’s how you can do it:
Open OBS Studio:
If you haven’t already, download and install OBS Studio on your computer.
Launch OBS Studio.
Configure Hotkeys:
Click on the Settings menu in OBS.
In the left side panel, click on the Hotkeys tab.
Locate the hotkey options for Start Recording and Stop Recording.
By default, there are no hotkeys set up for these actions.
Enter the custom hotkey combinations you want to use to enable and disable screen recording. For example, you can use CTRL + R.
Click Apply to save your changes.
Automatically Record When Streaming (Optional):
If you’re forgetful (like many of us), you can set OBS to automatically start recording when you begin streaming.
Click on the settings button (gear icon) in the bottom right corner of OBS.
Under the General tab, find the Output settings section.
Check the box that says Automatically Record When Streaming.
Click Apply to save the setting.
Recording Settings:
Now that you have your hotkeys set up, let’s review some basic recording settings to ensure the quality of your recordings:
Open OBS again and go to Settings.
Click on the Video tab.
Aim for 1080P video with a frame rate of 60FPS (adjust as needed).
No downscale filter is required if both the base resolution and canvas resolution match.
Next, click on the Output settings tab and change the Output mode from Simple to Advanced.
Under the recording settings, review options such as Recording Path (where your recorded videos will be stored).
