Why would you want to add mods to a Minecraft server? Well, mods can add in a ton of awesome things to Minecraft, and if you add mods to a Minecraft 1.17.1 server, you will be able to play modded Minecraft without your friends. So, here is how to get mods on a Minecraft server in 1.17.1!
Before we get into installing mods on your server though, I do want to mention that you and all your friends will have to have any mods that are installed on the server installed locally as well. What this means is that if you Tinker’s Construct on the server, anyone who plays on the server will need Tinker’s Construct in their mods folder in the .minecraft folder.
Luckily, we have in-depth guides linked above on how to install Forge 1.17.1, and then, how to add mods to Forge 1.17.1. These are great for you, but also for your friends to learn how to install the mods you want to add to the server.
You will also need to have a modded Forge Minecraft server setup for 1.17.1. The good news is we have a complete guide on how to start a Forge Minecraft server linked in the description above. That guide will go through every step of created a Forge Minecraft server, and even show you how to allow your friends to join your modded Minecraft server.
Finally, we can move on to downloading the mods for your server. Most Minecraft 1.17.1 mods are hosted on CurseForge. You can find a link in the description above to two mods on CurseForge. The download process is the same for them all. Just look at the right-hand sidebar and scroll down until you see the 1.17 section. Under this, you are looking for the 1.17.1 version of the mod you are downloading. You will also want to make sure it is the Forge version. Some mods only support Forge whereas some support other launchers. In that case, you will need the 1.17.1 Forge version of the mod. Once you have the correct version, click the orange download button next to it. Your mod will download for you server. You will need to keep/save the file depending on your browser though.
After you have your mods downloaded, open your Minecraft Forge server folder. In this folder, you will see a ‘mods’ folder. Open that mods folder, and drag-and-drop the mods you downloaded into this folder. You can start your server, and you now know how to add mods to a Minecraft server in 1.17.1!
Don’t forget though that you will also need to add the mods you added to your server to your mods folder on your computer as well. If you don’t, you will not be able to join your server.
