When updating your Minecraft server, you will first want to backup your Minecraft server. This ensures that if you have any issues whatsoever when updating your Minecraft server you can simply rollback to the latest backup to fix the issues you may have. After your server is backed-up we can move on to actually updating your server. The first step of this is downloading the update server file. This can be helpful for updating a server to version that isn't the most recent.
Once you have your updated Minecraft server.jar downloaded for 1.17.1, it is actually very easy to update. All you need to do is replace the server.jar in your Minecraft server folder with the server.jar for Minecraft 1.17.1. That's it. It is honestly so easy that we debated whether or not to make this video.
At this point, you can now join your server on Minecraft 1.17.1. Your world will still be just as it was, and you will even still have the same items in your inventory.
Now, I do want to mention that if you have a modded server, it is advise that you do not update it. If you do, you will need to make sure all mods are updated and working in Minecraft 1.17.1 before updating. If you don't, your world will corrupt, and you will have issues.
