About this video: This video is a complete guide on allowing Java through your firewall with Windows Defender. This will fix any issues you may have when it comes to your friends being able to join your server after you have port forwarded.
Commonly, when your friends are unable to join your server even if the port forward is correct, you are most likely having issues with your Windows Defender Firewall blocking the connection.
To get started, we can go to the start menu and search “Windows Defender Firewall” and open the control panel for Windows Defender that appears.
Click “Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall in the left-hand sidebar. Then, click the “Change Settings” box if needed. You may need to confirm you know what you are doing with user account control.
Next, find all instances of “Java”, “Minecraft”, and “Open JDK” and make them allowed on both public and private networks using the checkboxes. Click “Okay”, and the settings will now save. Typically, this is all you need to do, and you are good to go!
However, in some cases, you will also need to go “Advanced Settings” in the left-hand sidebar. Then, click “Inbound Rules”. Find “Java”, “Minecraft”, and “Open JDK” and make sure they are all enabled. If they are disabled, this can be done by clicking on them and clicking “Enable Rule”.
Lastly, we can add Java manually if needed. Most people won’t need to do this though. Start by going to Advanced Settings from the Windows Defender control panel and clicking “Inbound Rules”. Select “New Rule” and “Program”. Go to “Browse” and then local disk. Find the Program Files folder, then Java and then open the jdk/java folder that is there. Open the “bin” folder and select “java.exe”. Click on “Next”, allow the connection, make sure everything is checked, and click Next again. Name the file and save it.
Repeat the above process to add javaw.exe as well. This will then have full added Java to your Windows Defender firewall manually if it didn’t exist before.
With that, you now know how to allow Java through your firewall for Minecraft servers. If you have any questions about using Windows Defender with Java, let us know in the comments.
