Smart Object layers are primarily edited through the individual contents document that opens inside of Photoshop. A smart object can be editing by right clicking and choosing to edit contents, or by double clicking on the smart layer icon that is displayed on the layer thumbnail. The changes to the layer can be made inside of the new document or Photoshop tab that opens. Once changes have been made the document will need to be saved in order to update the primary PSD.

Non destructive edits can also be made to smart objects in Photoshop. These include things such as layer masks, filters and layer styles. When filters are added to a smart object layer in Photoshop the filter effects will remain customizable and sit as options on the layer.
