Background music can be added to a video in After Effects by simply importing the audio and dragging it into the composition. Typically background music will be quieter and be added only to improve the quality and feel of a video.

Once the audio has been added to the video you can control the volume through the audio level settings. Lowering the audio level on the background music into the negatives will decrease the volume. The lower the number the quieter the background muse will be.
