Photoshop layers and groups can both be duplicated by right clicking on them and choosing to duplicate. This method gives you options to customise how and where the layers are duplicated. Through the right click method you can duplicate a layer or group to another opened Photoshop document, or send the files to a new document. The new document will create a new PSD that the selected layers and groups will be duplicated to. Once a layer has been duplicated the new duplicate is unique from the first, and won’t be modified when the original is.

The second method that you can use to duplicate a layer or group in Photoshop is to use the keyboard shortcut. With a layer or group selected pressing Ctrl + J or Command + J on a MAc will duplicate. Duplicating layers this way will not result in the duplicate menu opening, and instead will quickly duplicate the selected layers in the current Photoshop document.
