How to Add Cinematic Black Bars in After Effects CC
Cinematic black bars add a professional look to edits and can give a movie-like quality due to the appearance of a wider resolution. Black bars can be added in a number of ways inside of After Effects. The easiest method is to use the CC Jaws effect on a black solid. With the right settings, CC Jaws will provide black bars on the top and bottom of a video. The bars will be equal and controllable, allowing you to adjust the size of the black bars to the height you want.
While cinematic bars are typically black, using a solid will allow you to set the bars to whatever color you like. The color of the bars can be adjusted through the solid settings.
The solid you’re using for the cinematic black bars will need to be the top layer. This way all of the underlying videos and effects won’t affect the bars. Placing adjustment layers above the black bars can sometimes cause discoloration or other issues in the video. It is also best to make sure the video layers are big enough to extend past the cinematic black bars.
