Setting your PC monitor to a high refresh rate like 144Hz or 240Hz is crucial for a smoother visual experience, especially in fast-paced games. Even if you have a high refresh rate monitor, Windows often defaults to 60Hz.


Here is the best method to change your refresh rate in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Important Pre-requisites
Before you begin, make sure your setup is capable of supporting a high refresh rate:

Monitor: Check your monitor's specifications to confirm that it can run at 144Hz, 240Hz, or higher. You can usually find this information in the product manual or on the manufacturer's website.

Cable: The cable you use is critical.

DisplayPort (DP) 1.2 or higher is generally recommended for high refresh rates.

HDMI 2.0 or higher can also support high refresh rates, but you should check your monitor's specific requirements. An older HDMI 1.4 cable, for example, may not be able to output 144Hz at higher resolutions.
