After Effects can be used to fade out a video clip using the opacity feature. Opacity controls how solid the video will appear, the lower the opacity the more transparent the video will appear. With keyframes you can scale the opacity from 100 to 0, fading out the clip. The keyframes can be places anywhere giving you complete control over how long the fade out effect will last. The larger the gap between the two keyframes the longer the effect will go for. A useful tip is to use the time duration metric in the top corner of the timeline to see how long the effect will last. When fading out a clip typically the effect will last at least 1 second.

The keyframes also give extra control over how clean the video will fade out. By right clicking on the second keyframe you can add a keyframe assistant to ease in the fade. With the ease in keyframe assistant selected the fade will start off faster and end slower, creating a smoother animation.

If you are trying to fade the video into another then the second video clip will need to be below it. As the video begins to fade from the first opacity keyframe the clip on the layers beneath it will begin to be seen. It is best to make sure that the clip covers the entire fade out period, from the first keyframe.
