How to Fix Cannot Obtain IP Address PS5 & No Internet Connection (Easy Method)
If your PS5 displays a "Cannot Obtain IP Address" error or has no internet connection, follow these steps to fix the issue:
Restart Devices:
Power off the PS5 completely, not rest mode, and unplug it for 1-2 minutes.
Restart your router/modem by unplugging it for 30 seconds, then plugging it back in.
Reconnect and power on both devices, then test the connection, Settings, Network, Connection Status, Test Internet Connection.
Check Network Cables and Connections:
For wired LAN: Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely plugged into the PS5 and router/modem. Test with a different cable, Cat 5e or higher.
For Wi-Fi: Confirm the PS5 is within the router’s range and there’s no interference, e.g., walls, other devices.
Try a different router port or move the PS5 closer to the router.
Manually Set Up Network:
Go to Settings, Network, Settings, Set Up Internet Connection.
Select Wi-Fi or LAN, then choose Manual setup.
Set:
IP Address Settings: Automatic
DHCP Host Name: Do Not Specify
DNS Settings: Automatic or try Google DNS, Primary 8.8.8.8, Secondary 8.8.4.4
Save and test the connection.
Check Router Settings:
Log into your router’s admin panel, check manual for access.
Ensure DHCP is enabled to assign IP addresses automatically.
Enable UPnP for better device connectivity.
Reserve a static IP for the PS5:
Find the PS5’s MAC address, Settings, Network, Connection Status, View Connection Status.
In the router, assign a fixed IP to the PS5’s MAC address.
Open PSN ports:
TCP: 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480
UDP: 3478, 3479, 49152–65535
Update PS5 Firmware:
If you can’t connect, download the latest firmware on a USB from Sony’s website using a PC.
Go to Settings, System, System Software, System Software Update and Settings, and update.
Alternatively, boot into Safe Mode, hold power button until second beep, about 7 seconds, and select Update System Software, option 3.
Check Internet Service:
Test the internet on another device, e.g., phone or laptop, to confirm it’s working.
Contact your internet service provider to check for outages or account issues.
Disable Router Firewall or VPN:
Temporarily disable your router’s firewall or any VPN to test if they’re blocking the PS5.
Re-enable after testing to maintain security.
Change Wi-Fi Channel or Band:
If using Wi-Fi, log into your router and switch to a less congested channel, e.g., 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4GHz, or use 5GHz for faster speeds.
On the PS5, select the 5GHz band if available, Settings, Network, Set Up Internet Connection.
Rebuild Database:
Turn off the PS5, boot into Safe Mode, hold power button until second beep, about 7 seconds.
Connect controller via USB, select Rebuild Database, option 5.
Test the connection after completion.
