How to Fix if your Headset & Sound is Not Working on Your PS5 Console (Easy Tutorial)
If your headset or sound is not working on your PS5, follow these steps to troubleshoot and fix the issue:
Check Headset Connection:
For wired headsets: Ensure the 3.5mm jack is securely plugged into the DualSense controller or USB port (if USB adapter).
For wireless headsets: Confirm the USB dongle is connected or the headset is paired via Bluetooth (if supported).
Test with another headset to rule out a faulty device.
Verify Audio Output Settings:
Go to Settings, Sound, Audio Output.
Set Output Device to your headset, e.g., Headset Connected to Controller, USB Headset, or wireless model.
Adjust Volume (Headphones) slider to ensure it’s not muted or too low.
Enable 3D Audio for compatible headsets if desired.
Check Controller Settings:
Ensure the controller is charged and connected, via USB or wirelessly.
Go to Settings, Sound, Audio Output, and confirm Controller Speaker is not overriding headset audio.
Press the mute button on the DualSense controller, below PS button, to ensure it’s not muted, orange light off.
Adjust Sound in Control Center:
Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
Select Sound, headphone/speaker icon.
Ensure the headset is selected and adjust the Headphones volume slider.
Check Game/Chat Balance to prioritize game audio or voice chat if needed.
Test TV or Monitor Audio (No Headset):
If using TV/monitor speakers, go to Settings, Sound, Audio Output, Output Device, and select HDMI Device (TV).
Ensure TV/monitor volume is not muted and HDMI-CEC is enabled if applicable.
Check HDMI cable is secure and try a different HDMI port.
Update PS5 and Controller Firmware:
Go to Settings, System, System Software, System Software Update and Settings, and update the PS5.
Update controller firmware via Settings, Accessories, Controllers, Wireless Controller Device Software.
Check Mic Settings (If Mic Also Fails):
Go to Settings, Sound, Microphone.
Set Input Device to your headset’s mic, e.g., Microphone on Headset.
Adjust Microphone Level and enable Sidetone to hear your voice.
Ensure the mic isn’t muted in Control Center, Sound, Microphone.
Restart the PS5:
Power off the PS5 completely, not rest mode, and unplug for 1-2 minutes.
Reconnect the headset and power on to test audio.
Clear Cache and Rebuild Database:
Turn off the PS5, boot into Safe Mode, hold power button until second beep, about 7 seconds.
Connect controller via USB, select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, option 5.
Test audio after completion.
Check Game-Specific Audio Settings:
Some games have independent audio settings. Check the game’s options menu for muted audio or headset compatibility.
Ensure the game supports your headset’s features, e.g., 3D audio.
Test with Another Device:
Connect the headset to another device, e.g., phone or PC, to confirm it works.
If the headset fails, it may be defective; check the manufacturer’s support.
Factory Reset (Last Resort):
Back up data to USB or PS Plus cloud, Settings, Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
Go to Settings, System, System Software, Reset Options, Reset Your Console.
Reinstall firmware via USB if needed, download from Sony’s website.
Reconfigure audio settings and test.
