That means that when you finish this video, you will be playing Minecraft Java 1.21 with a controller!
To get started, we will need to go over how to download the Minecraft controller mod. Specifically, we are going to be using the MidnightControls mod for Minecraft 1.21. This mod allows you to use an Xbox controller with Minecraft Java Edition as well as Playstation controllers, Nintendo Switch controllers, and even the SteamDeck. It works with pretty much any controller that you can connect to a computer.
In the description above, there is a link to download MidnightControls. That will take you to Modrinth. On Modrinth, click on the “Versions” tab and find the 1.21 Fabric version of MidnightControls. Click the download button next to this version.
We will also need to download the FabricAPI. This is a mod that the controller mod requires, and it is linked above. Click the “Download Fabric API” button that page. Then, click on “Files” and find the 1.21 version. Click the three dots next to the version and select “Download File”. The 1.21 version of the FabricAPI will begin downloading.
After you have the Fabric API downloaded, we will also need to download and install the Fabric mod loader itself. This is what actually allows you to add the controller mod and play Minecraft Java 1.21 with a controller. Finally, we can actually show you how to install the Minecraft controller mod on PC. Start off by opening up the Minecraft Launcher. Then, go to the “Installations” tab at the top. Here, you will have a Fabric 1.21 installation. Hover over this and click the folder icon that appears to open your .minecraft folder.
Within your .minecraft folder, you will have a “mods” folder. If not, just create one! To use a controller with Minecraft Java 1.21, drag-and-drop the MidnightControls mod and the Fabric API into this mods folder. It’s that easy to add the controller mod to Minecraft.
Before you actually launch Minecraft though, you will want to make sure that you plug in your controller as plugging your controller in while Minecraft is open can cause it to crash.
Next, play Minecraft 1.21 using the Fabric installation. When you do, Minecraft Java Edition will open, and you can use your controller to navigate the main menu and most importantly play in-game. The controls are very similar to Bedrock Edition, but they can be customized however you want in the settings menu.
