About this video: If you want to change the thumbsticks on an Xbox controller, this is the video for you! We quickly show you how to change your thumbsticks in order to bring new life to an Xbox controller. Thumbsticks are actually one of the easiest things to change about an Xbox controller, so without anymore delay, here is how to get new thumbsticks on an Xbox controller.
First things first, you will need to purchase new thumbsticks. I used eBay, and you can find a link to eBay in the description above. Beware though that every eBay seller is different, so make sure they are trusted with good reviews and have sold a few pairs of thumbsticks.
Once you have your thumbsticks purchased, we will need to make sure that you have the correct tools. This uses a T8 Torx bit. I also recommend having some sort of a pry tool as you will need to pop the plastic off the back of the controller to access screws.
With this in mind, to get started take the battery cover off the controller and remove the batteries. There will be a sticker behind the battery and behind it, you will find a screw. Remove the sticker and take this screw out.
Next, use your pry tool to remove the plastic panels on the back of each side of the controller. These use plastic clips, so be careful. With that being said, I’ve never broken a clip.
The next four screws will be revealed on each side. Take all four of these out, and the controller can now be flipped over and opened up. The front of the case should just pull right off.
Now, you can simply pull the thumbsticks right off. Then, add the new thumbsticks right on it. You may need to turn them in order to get them to fit correctly as it isn’t a perfect circle and is instead an oval that they sit on.
At this point, you just need to reassemble. The key thing here is making sure that the front of the controller lines up and that the bumpers and buttons all work when you get the front case back on. I recommend putting in two screws and checking the fit again just to make sure. If all looks good, close the controller the rest of the way up.
