How to TEST your Xbox Controller for Stick Drift (Easy Method)
Stick drift occurs when your controller’s analog sticks register movement even when you’re not touching them, causing unwanted in-game actions like your character moving or the camera shifting. Warzone has built-in settings that can help you test for this issue by adjusting the deadzone, which is the area around the center of the stick where no input is registered.
Here’s how you can test your Xbox controller for stick drift using Warzone:
Launch Call of Duty: Warzone
Start the game on your Xbox console and ensure your controller is connected, either wired or wirelessly.
Access the Settings Menu
From the main menu, press the Options button (the one with three horizontal lines on your controller) to open the settings. Navigate to the gear icon to enter the settings menu.
Go to the Controller Settings
In the settings menu, look for the “Controller” tab. This section allows you to customize various controller inputs, including deadzone settings, which are key for testing stick drift.
Locate the Deadzone Settings
Scroll down to the “Deadzone” section. In Warzone, you’ll typically find options for both the left and right sticks, often labeled as “Left Stick Min” and “Right Stick Min.” These settings control the minimum input threshold for the sticks to register movement.
Test for Stick Drift
Set both the “Left Stick Min” and “Right Stick Min” to 0. This minimizes the deadzone, making the sticks as sensitive as possible.
Warzone often provides a visual diagram of your controller inputs in this menu, showing the position of your sticks in real-time. If your controller has stick drift, you’ll notice the cursor or indicator moving on its own without you touching the sticks.
For example, if the left stick drifts, your character might move forward or sideways in-game, even when your hands are off the controller. If the right stick drifts, the camera might pan or tilt without input.
Leave the controller untouched for a few seconds and observe the diagram. If the sticks are registering movement (e.g., the dot moves away from the center), you have stick drift.
Adjust the Deadzone to Confirm
If you notice drift, slowly increase the “Left Stick Min” and “Right Stick Min” values (e.g., to 3, 5, or higher) until the unwanted movement stops. This helps you determine the severity of the drift—higher values needed to stop the movement indicate worse drift.
Test in-game by loading into a low-pressure mode like Plunder or the Training Course in the Warzone Bootcamp playlist. Move around and aim to see if the drift persists with your adjusted settings
