This video discusses what Steam Proton is, and how to enable it for all your games in your Steam library so you can play the majority of Windows exclusive games on Linux.

Proton is a tool released by Valve, the company behind Steam, to create a one click solution for running Windows games on Linux.

More specifically, Proton is actually a combination of several technologies including Wine, DXVK, Esync and others that allow Windows games to run on Linux.

Since Proton is updated automatically, it does mean that you no-longer have to maintain libraries yourselves.

This is important as it means that a gamer who wants to try out Linux will not lose access to a large part of their game library.

That being said, Proton does not work for every game, and it typically has problems with games that have some form of restrictive DRM, anti-cheat, and internal game launchers.

In addition, some games will require some form of tweaking in order to get them to run, which is where the game reports on ProtonDB come in handy.

ProtonDB rates games compatibility based on user feedback, so a game will either be categorised as Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Borked.

As a general rule, any game that is rated Platinum should not require any tweaking to run it on Linux, whilst Gold typically means that the game requires some tweaks to run but is otherwise a decent experience on Linux.

Silver and Bronze means that the game will require some tweaks to run and the performance may be lacking, and finally Borked means that the game does not run on Linux at all.

The only requirements for using Proton are that you have a GPU that supports DXVK.

To enable Proton for all your games in a Steam library, you just need to enable the following:

Steam / Settings / Steam Play / Enable Steam Play for all titles / Run other titles with: / Proton 4.11-12 (or latest version of Proton)
