I beat Pokemon Emerald's Battle Tower with the Hoenn starters!
I finally did it! I finally got a gold trainer card on my OG childhood save file! And it only took about 660 hours! (Mind you, a lot of this time was spent doing whatever stupid shit my 10-year-old self did back then...) Only recently did I decide to get all the gold symbols.
If you're wondering how I captured the footage--I have a DS flashcart that I can use to backup my save file. With this, I was able to get my save file onto my computer and view the battle replay on emulator. This is also how I was able to edit my Pokemons' IV's and whatnot, which I did simply to skip the breeding/training grind.
The team:
--------------------------
Blaziken (M) @ Salac Berry
Ability: Blaze
Level: 50
EVs: 252 Atk / 84 SpA / 172 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Reversal
- Overheat
- Hidden Power [Ghost]
- Endure
It's worth noting that I used a different Blaziken with a more generic mixed attacking set (Sky Uppercut, Overheat, HP Ghost, Thunderpunch) with Whtie Herb for the first few rounds of the tower. The early round opponents are so weak that they can't reliably get you into Reversal range. Once I got to round 3 or so I switched to the above Reversal Blaziken set, which was able to solo a lot of opposing teams until about round 6-7.
Swampert (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
Level: 50
EVs: 132 HP / 132 Atk / 28 Def / 116 SpA / 4 SpD / 92 Spe
Brave Nature
- Earthquake
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Protect
Swampert's EV spread is based on Werster's Swampert from his Battle Frontier speedruns. My Swampert hits the same benchmarks as Wertser's, but with slightly redistributed EV's to make better use of the perfect IV's. (Werster's does not have perfect IV's because he RNG manipulates his at the start of the game).
Sceptile (M) @ Bright Powder
Ability: Overgrow
Level: 50
EVs: 252 SpA / 44 SpD / 212 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Leaf Blade
- Substitute
- Leech Seed
- Protect
Sceptile was surprisingly a beast in the Tower. Even without Leftovers, Protect allows Leech Seed to outpace Substitute damage against most Pokemon (it depends on the opponent's HP stat). This makes him a great win condition. With 212 speed EV's, he outspeeds everything in the Frontier except a single Jolteon set. This makes him an excellent revenge killer. He can also intentionally sub down into Overgrow range to boost his Leaf Blade, though I rarely used this strat.
