Never played this game before, but I've been meaning to! What you see here is my first impression of the game Undertale, which is also why it ran a bit long. So far I'm impressed! As simple as it appears, there's some depth here. I already feel attached to Toriel, and I LOVE it when a game makes you feel a connection with one of its characters! I also haven't yet felt like the game was railroading me, even at the very beginning in the "tutorial" areas, I felt like I was making my own choices. I definitely plan to play through this game again after I finish it to see what happens when you try different things; this game seems to be a great example of making the player feel choice and the consequences of their choices.
The controls were a little confusing at first. It took me a while to figure out how to choose the different options available to you during encounters. Once I did figure it out though, the mechanics really served the narrative and theme well: you don't have to fight. You can resolve conflicts without violence. BUT it's your choice! You can choose to fight or to talk things out, and that choice feels meaningful rather than forced. Well done! I'm looking forward to finishing this game and a second and maybe even third playthrough!
