Input Lag #16 - PS3 3rd Strike Online Edition rough test: 2.5 frames
Rough test of input lag in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition on PS3 on my set-up, which includes a HRAP V 2017 arcade stick and a 5ms display lag monitor. On a computer, if you're playing this video at 60fps, you can pause playback, then advance one frame at a time by pressing the "." key, and count along with me the frames that go by between the arcade stick's light punch button being fully pressed down, and Ryu beginning to play his light punch animation. I counted about an even split between punches taking 2 frames and punches taking 3 frames to start to come out, so I'm calling it a 2.5 frame delay.
This is a totally unscientific test and only really relevant to the performance of other games tested on my current set-up! For instance, the last time I tested PS3 3rd Strike was several years ago and I called it a straight 2 frame delay...that test was even rougher than this one, though, and my video output method was slightly different: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hT1uEUFcTfA&list=PLZO3OPzPjIzMl-jcYl0YFhwRYTyP5R8M3&index=2&t=0s . Much more recently, I conducted what might be a slightly more reliable test with the Dreamcast version of 3rd Strike, and measured a 6 frame delay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5JMwk6vp_A&list=PLZO3OPzPjIzMl-jcYl0YFhwRYTyP5R8M3&index=15 . Somewhat longer ago, I got 4 frames in the PS2 version of 3rd Strike: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYqmju1chOI&list=PLZO3OPzPjIzMl-jcYl0YFhwRYTyP5R8M3&index=6 (and back then I clocked 5 frames in the DC version : P). And around that same time, though I never uploaded it, I counted about 3 frames of delay in the "30th Anniversary" version on PS4.
So, compared to the other 3rd Strikes I've tested, this PS3 version is the most responsive.
Recorded 9/28/19 w/ PS3, component video out via (a matrix component splitter and then) OSSC, with a ~60fps cell phone camera. I also tested video out through an Elgato HD with its custom PS3 component cable, and got the same 2.5 frames of delay result. (The Elgato HD's video quality isn't as good, though, so I'll be sticking with a regular PS component cable to a 4x2 component matrix splitter, to an OSSC, then through a Framemeister to an Elgato HD60, for recording actual direct footage.)
