Ion Fury - Cyberpunk Roundabout
I'm a junkie for FPS games and the era of Build Engine shooters was a glorious time, and the news that 3dRealmswas going to make a Eduke32 engine shooter was too tempting to look past, Ion Fury which was called Ion Maiden at one point.
Essentially a pre-quel to the 2015 video game Bombshell, Ion Fury follows Shelly Bombshell on a quest of Vengeance against Dr. Heskel (Voiced by John St. Jon) whos unleashed a massive invasion of mechanical nanobots and soldiers, True FPS style that Build engine shooters follow, Ion Fury is a standout from other "Boom Shooters" out there.
Shelly's default weapons are the "Electrifyer" a baton that shocks enemies with a swing or the alternative attack jabs a shockwave into the enemy, and the signature "Loverboy", a magnum that fires 3 shots at one for a total of 18 rounds you use. It's alternative attack is VERY important as it can headshot enemies who are marked with a Bombshell symbol to mark where they are, and on high skills you cannot hold your draw on the gun for the headshot mode for long, with Maximum Fury only allowing 3 seconds and a cooldown of 10 seconds to draw again.
Most of the game gushes build engine beauty with incredible cityscapes and other areas, Our enemies include basic cultists that fire auto rifles, shotgunners/grenadiers, the "great priests" who fire the ion bow, and other mechanical horrors await across nearly 7(!) yes 7 Episodes broken up into nearly 28 levels, Theres so much detail to the maps that no computer of the 1990s could handle it without having a fire break out, it's so beautiful.
Controls will take some time to get used to, you select weapons by pressing the up and down d-pad with tapping R3 on the right stick quick selects the Electrifyer and the Loverboy Revovler, Circle will crouch, X and R1 jumps. Left and right d-pad uses the radar and medikit pickups, while L2 used the alternative attacks, also the movement and turning is stiff so adjusting the movement, aiming and stick "sensitivity" is a must.
There's a few issues I have with Ion Fury despite how much I personally play it: Sometimes the targeting of the alternative headshot mode on the loverboy doesn't connect and or it does not appear on the target forcing me to fire as usual with R2, Ammo limits suck because despite the excess of ammo in levels you are always seeming like small pockets with 80 rounds only for the loverboy possible and 48 shells of grenades or shotgun buckshot for your "Disperser" shotgun/grenade launcher. A few of the enemies are.. infuriating to say the least including the "Skinjob", some mechanical skeleton that can REALLY dish damage even on the easiest setting and small millepede monsters named the Diopede, these things take too much damage and explosives are only way to get rid of them quickly.
But what hurts Ion Fury the most? It's boss map which is named "Epicenter", I'm ripping the bandaid off as Heskel, after all the shit you go through and the stuff he tells you about and insults he gives, He is not even defeated, We blow up his massive generator boss while dealing with every freaking enemy type possible and low ammo and health placements in the boss "arena". For those who want to platinum this game you'll need to be prepared to look for many easter eggs including a few that are timed and beating the game on Maximum Fury which STILL eludes me today.
Regardless, I have been always impressed by build engine games and with Ion Fury, 3dRealms and Void Point both made a FPS game as a love letter to them times, It has frustrating parts but yet, that's what makes it a certified masterpiece in my eyes, play it for the fun not for a boss fight, and for platinum seekers, good luck.
