IS IT WORTH IT?! | A Review of ALTF4 in About 3 Minutes!

Welcome back to 3 Minute Game Reviews where TODAY we’re taking a look at ALTF4 for PC. The goal of this review is to help you decide if it’s worth buying and playing in 2021.
ALTF4 is an extremely addictive game with a very simple premise which basically involves not falling to your death, getting impaled, being crushed and typically just surviving long enough to make it to the end of the obstacle course. It actually reminds me a lot like my daily commute to school back in the day…
Anyway it came out in February 2021 and honestly it slipped completely under my radar but I’m really glad I came across it because, like many other simple things in life, it’s incredibly fun and it only costs 1.5 euros!
You play as a knight complete with heavy metal armor and, together with your endless supply of throw able chickens, you have to complete a grueling obstacle course which is littered with the most punishing and irritating traps imaginable.
Just to go one step further they decided to make it perma-death which means when you die, and you will die many many MANY times, you have to start all over again from the beginning.
That’s not to say there aren’t save points though… As you make your way through the game you’ll come across save game signs which are attached to floating balloons. If you manage to pop the balloon before it floats away by launching one of your chickens at it, then you’ll come back to that point when you die.
Once.
If you die more than once without collecting another save sign then it’s game over and you’re put right back at the start!
As of right now it’s still in early access and one of the tips that pop up in-game mentions an upcoming story mode for the game, but even in its current state I’ve had over 5 hours of fun and frustration trying to complete the game a single time while listening to the ridiculous but catchy in-game music that encourages you to try again just one more time after you’ve died for the 65th time in a single session.
The controls are simple and intuitive and the game itself is easy to pick up even if it’s the first runner game you’ve played. W,A,S and D, space and left click are pretty much all you need to manage. You can also hit R to turn yourself into a limp ragdoll to avoid taking fall damage, and G when it all gets too much and you need to start over.
The graphics aren’t half bad either, atleast good enough for the price, and the music’s super catchy but there’s also a fair bit of jankiness to be had aswell though in a funny, lovable way kind of way that gives it character.
It’s rough around the edges, literally, and a lot of the terrain looks like it was pieced together by a talented 12 year old in a map editor, but it doesn’t distract you from enjoying the game, in fact it gives off those sweet vibes of a game from the early 2000’s like Armed & Dangerous and Giants Citizen Kabuki, when jagged edges on mountains were the norm and gameplay was king.
Honestly I love it and although it kicked my arse more times than I care to admit and frustrated the hell out of me on more than one occasion, I always found myself wanting to go back for more and I really can’t think of a better way to spend 1.5 euros to get between 5-10 hours of challenging fun.
