A detailed review of Peaky Blinders Mastermind in about 3 minutes where we tell you if it's worth buying and playing today...

In Peaky Blinders Mastermind you get to play as all the different members from the Peaky blinders TV series simultaneously in order to complete a list of timed objectives using a unique ability to rewind time and switch characters on the fly.

Now don’t worry if that didn’t make any sense because even after reading the info on their Steam page I still had no idea what the game was about until I started actually playing it.

There’s a total of 10 levels in the game and for each level you get to play as a few different characters from the Peaky Blinders family which you can switch between whenever you like.

You’re given a short backstory and a set objectives for each level that you need to complete within a certain amount of time. Each playable character has their own unique abilities, like Tommy can convince certain npc’s to open doors or pull levers for him, Finn can squeeze through small gaps that no one else can fit through and Ada can distract guards while you sneak past on a different character.

You have to regularly switch between different characters to perform actions like having to crawl through a small hole in a wall and grab a key from a table as Finn, then rewind time, switch over to Tommy and walk over to a point where you can receive the key that you just stole as Finn so you can unlock a door and move on to the next area. calculations meme

I’m trying so hard to make this make sense…

Basically it’s a fairly simple and bland puzzle game with a rewind and fast forward mechanic where you have to get one character to pull a lever to open a door just as you turn up at the same spot on another character to be able to walk through the door and that’s about all there is to it. You can rewind time as many times as you like and honestly it’s a pretty unique mechanic, but it’s unfortunately not enough to make it an interesting game atleast not for me…

I’m a big Peaky Blinders fan and I was dissapointed with the lack of voice acting on any of the character dialogue. The art-style in the cut scenes and the game itself is great and they’ve done a great job capturing the appearance of each character with what looks like hand drawn scenes, but having to read through loads of written dialogue instead of listening to the actual actors speak their lines in a game that carries the official name of the series is abit disappointing.

Unfortunately the game itself isn’t enough to pull it through either. The gameplay loop involves pulling levers, holding doors, distracting guards and walk around the same looking areas again and again as you complete the required tasks on each character one at a time.

As I mentioned earlier there’s only 10 levels in the game with each level taking between 10 minutes to an hour to complete depending on how fast you go. You receive a score of either bronze, silver or gold depending on how fast you complete each level but you can move on to the next level even if you get bronze so there’s little to no incentive to replay a level to try and increase your score.

I won’t say that it’s a bad game because I honestly think you might enjoy it if you like solving relatively simple puzzles and you’re closer to a fan of the TV series than you are a gamer, but if you’re looking for the next strategy game to sink hundreds of hours into then I’m afraid this isn’t it.

Overall the art-style’s good and the music’s fantastic, but unfortunately it follows the trend of most other TV to game crossovers and just fails to bring enough meaningful gameplay or recognisable grittiness from the series to make it a memorable experience, and for a whopping 24.99 at full price on Steam we don’t recommend it.
