If I had to sum up Hunt Showdown in a single word then I’d say it was brilliant, but that’s probably not enough info for a review so I best go into a little bit more detail.

Hunt Showdown is a thrilling first person shooter set in the murky swamps of Louisiana in the mid to late 1800’s in a world that has been overrun by zombies and hell spawn. Your mission as a bounty hunter is to find and kill the boss whilst trying not to die to enemy players and try to extract safely with a bounty at key exit points dotted around the map.

It’s got a deep progression system and a unique blend of PvPvE elements for up to 12 players which basically means it’s you along with your team of up to 3 players vs everything and everyone. There’s still plenty of players online in 2021 and finding a match never takes more than a couple of minutes.

You recruit individual hunters which can be fitted out with different weapons, equipment and traits, and each hunter gains their own XP up to a maximum of level 50. The thing I love most about Hunt is that every match forces you to be on your A-Game because if your hunter dies, they die for good, along with any weapons and items they were carrying at the time.

Now that might sound quite harsh but hunters are generally intended to be fairly disposable and are easily replaced between matches. Higher level hunters have more traits which makes things abit easier, like being able to activate rifts to find the boss location from a short distance, and increasing the amount of health you heal whenever you use a medkit, but these are all things you can get back after 2 to 3 more matches using a new hunter, so rather than make everyone scared to engage and causing rampant camping as you might expect, it actually just makes the gun play so much more intense when you know you have a lot to lose but also so much to gain.

Aswell as hunter XP you also have a bloodline level which represents your overall player level. Each time you reach level 100 on your bloodline you get the option to prestige your account which resets everything back to rank 1 and removes all your weapons and cash in return for 10% more xp gain or a legendary item. Losing all your weapons each time you gain a new prestige level is quite harsh but it’s a good way to get legendary items and it helps to keep the game balanced between veterans and new players.

There’s a wide variety of different weapons and items in the game, from bolt and lever action rifles, single and duel-wielded pistols, shotguns, grenades and Molotov cocktails to name a few, and I’ve never been left wanting for a choice of weapon loadouts.

There’s also legendary variants of a lot of the base weapons along with legendary characters which can all be bought using the in-game premium currency known as blood bonds which you earn after each match or you can buy it with real money or through DLC packs. Legendary items are purely cosmetic and all the stats are identical to the base models.

Now graphically speaking the game looks good but it isn’t going to blow you away by 2021 standards, but the atmosphere is fantastic. There’s a tense eeriness to the world and the maps are littered with derelict villages and factories where undead monsters patrol the streets.

The sound design is fantastic and the music is really catchy. Hearing the directions of enemy players and monsters feels really natural and there’s noise traps everywhere that can alarm players and monsters alike, such as stepping on broken glass, spooking flocks of birds and making dogs bark by getting too close, all of which draws some unwanted attention your way as you try to sneak up on a boss or a player...
