Euro Truck Simulator 2 or ETS2 for short was developed and published by SCS Software in 2012 and is still being actively worked on today with new expansions, cosmetic DLC’s and patches released regularly.
After a very brief tutorial you’re set free to start your own logistics empire in a 1:19 scale map of Europe. The base game includes the UK and a large part of mainland Europe, with a further 7 map expansions massively increasing the size of the map to include Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Spain, Southern France, Italy and more with Russia currently in development.
There’s 6 officially licensed truck brands in the game with a couple of different models available from each company including Volvo, Scania, Renault, MAN, DAF and Iveco. The traffic you see out on the roads isn’t licensed but the vehicle models look very similar to cars you’ll recognise from the real world just with different albeit similar looking badges.
You start out running jobs hauling cargo for other companies until you’ve raised enough money to buy your first truck either by doing quick jobs using borrowed trucks or by taking a loan though the amount you can borrow is limited until your level increases.
Once you’ve bought your first lorry you start getting paid more for completing each delivery. In the beginning when your level is low you typically get offered low paying, short distance jobs, but as you continue to successfully deliver cargo on time and damage free, your level starts to increase which allows you to unlock longer distance jobs and more types of cargo such as fragile loads like helicopters and yachts, and dangerous chemicals which each have their own ADR qualification requirement.
The goal is to continue to grow your trucking empire by buying more trucks and trailers and hiring AI drivers and generally just make as much money as possible while enjoying the fantastic feeling of driving cross country in a 60 ton truck.
As of right now the game only supports singleplayer with an official multiplayer currently under development for up to 8 players with AI traffic enabled. There’s also a very popular unofficial multiplayer mod known as TruckersMP which is completely free and allows thousands of players on a single server to drive together along with built in CB radio transmissions and community support for things like job logs. If you’re thinking of playing ETS2 for its multiplayer mod then you’ll be happy to know it’s still very much active and alive in 2021.
Another area the game excels in is mod support and the highly dedicated modding community. It’s got Steam Workshop integration which allows you to download community made mods directly through Steam, aswell as countless thousands of mods available on 3rd party mod sites. A couple of mods I recommend are Jazzycat’s traffic packs which add hundreds if not thousands of different types of AI traffic you’ll encounter on the roads in singleplayer, and ProMods which redesigns most cities in amazing detail aswell as adding new cities and regions like Iceland.
Graphically it’s hard to believe that it came out in 2012 and that’s thanks in no small part to the continued support and development of the game by SCS Software. It’s easily as good as modern day simulators being released in 2021 and honestly in some ways even better. The water droplets look incredible as they glide across the windshield when it’s raining, the day to night transition is mesmorising and fluid, and the world detail and lighting effects all look top notch...
