A detailed review of Age Of Empires II Definitive Edition in about 3 minutes!

Age of Empires II is an isometric real time strategy and city building game with a big emphasis on resource gathering and micro management but you probably knew that much already... The definitive edition is an official remaster of the original game that’s been remade with so much love you can taste it and the goal of this video is to help you figure out if it’s still worth buying in 2021.

Since it’s initial release way back in 1999 it’s been remastered twice. Once in 2013 as Age of Empires II HD which basically gave the graphics abit of a HD touch up and added The Last Khans expansion which included 4 new playable factions.

The Definitive Edition released in 2019 includes all the content from the original game plus The Last Khans expansion from Age of Empires HD with more expansions in the works. There’s also plenty of quality of life changes like support for a population limit of 500 without needing to use a mod, the ability to zoom in and out using the middle mouse wheel and impressive new visual effects for explosions and building destruction.

The graphics and the animations have been totally overhauled and it looks absolutely superb, but you need to download the free enhanced graphics DLC separately from Steam and then make sure it’s enabled in your library otherwise it might not download and the HD option in-game will be greyed out. Once it’s downloaded you can enable the full HD option in the in-game graphics options.

With the enhanced graphics turned on it’s like stepping back into the past and seeing Age of Empires II as I remember it looking back in the day. Everything looks crisp, the colours pop, the maps look breathtaking and all the unit animations are smooth and natural whether they’re chopping wood or in the middle of a battle. Honestly looks like the game came out yesterday and they’ve still managed to keep the underlying feel of the game exactly how I remember it as a kid.

They’ve recreated the soundtrack too and they got it spot on, managing to bring the music into the 2020’s as if it were a brand new game while being immediately recognisable to fans of the original.

All the classic game modes are right where they should be such as skirmish and Regicide where you have to try to keep your king alive aswell as an all new Battle Royale mode that can be played in either single or multiplayer. There’s also a very lengthy and detailed campaign spanning over 1000 years of human history.

Personally I never really got into the campaign but that’s just because I don’t have the patience for it. I prefer free-for-all skirmishes with 7 opponents and trying to survive the onslaught of attacks from all sides, but if you’re interested in story orientated gameplay then the game has you covered.

I didn’t have any issues finding a match online either but that’s to be expected considering the strong following that’s been playing the game for decades. It supports up to 8 players per match and the improved AI can definitely give you a run for your money.

In total there’s over 35 playable civilizations to choose from, each one with unique building aesthetics and a handful of special units that can drastically change the way each nation plays from start to finish.

Honestly there’s not much else to say other than great job to the developers for showing the world how to remaster a game properly. The underlying game was already great, but the new visuals, animations and support for 4k resolutions have made it a masterpiece all over again more than 20 years after it first came out and needless to say we recommend it as a worthy addition to your game library.

I hope you found this helpful, thanks for watching, have fun and don’t forget to save!
