Planetside 2 is a free to play class based mmofps which basically means there's hundreds of players running around shooting each other on the same persistent server 24 hours a day. The goal of this review is to help you decide if it's worth playing in 2021.
Let me start by saying that the playerbase is currently very healthy thanks to a new team that's been rolling out bold new content on a regular basis so if you're watching this wondering if there's anyone online then the answer is you definately won't have any trouble finding a battle.
Now when you first log in you'll be asked to create a character on one of the 3 warring factions. Each faction offers a mix of unique and cross faction weapons and vehicles that results in each side having their own strengths and weaknesses while still remaining fairly balanced.
The Terran Republic are communistic in nature and tend to favour a fast rate of fire, and they've got a large selection of extremely high rate of fire smg's and assault rifles, an awesome minigun for the heavy assault class, and a main battle tank that can anchor itself into the ground to increase it's rate of fire.
The New Conglomerate are all about freedom, when they aren't team killing each other atleast. They tend to favour shotguns and hard hitting but slow firing weapons. They've got a brick with an overshield for a main battle tank, they can stick an industrial sized shotgun to the nose of their combat aircraft, and their MAX suit can equip dual shotguns and pull out a human sized energy shield when times get tough.
The Vanu Sovereignty is sort of like a purple spandex wearing cult that uses rapid firing plasma weaponry to devastate enemies. They tend to favour mobility as seen in their Magrider hover tankthat has built in afterburners that let it climb mountains and escape from precarious situations.
There's some lore behind each faction that vaguely explains what they stand for and why they're each invested in the neverending war on Auraxis, but ultimately you can have multiple characters across all the factions so my suggestion is to just try each one and pick the one you enjoy the most but give it some time before you decide cos it's gonna take some practise to become competitive if it's your first time Planetside.
Anyway the first time you get in-game you're gonna run through a brief tutorial that walks you through the basics like how the flow of battle works, how to capture points and where to get ammo. It's pretty well made and definately worth doing if it's your first time playing the game.
Like in many other FPS games you'll only have a few weapons to choose from when you first start playing and you unlock more by just playing the game and earning xp. Getting kills, repairing vehicles or structures and reviving players are just a few ways you can earn xp.
Something worth mentioning is that the starter weapons are actually some of the best all round weapons in the game. Veterans will still destroy you at first but it has less to do with the weapons and more to do with them having a better understanding of the game mechanics.
Infantry is grouped into different playable classes including Scout, Light Assault, Medic, Engineer and Heavy Assault, and each class feels really unique to play thanks to each one having unique abilities that contribute to the overall battle in their own ways.
There's 4 primary maps but not all of them are available at the same time. As a battle rages on one map it eventually starts an alert event which triggers all out chaos on the server as all 3 sides try to secure the map by holding the most territory which then locks it down. The winning faction recieves prizes and bonus rewards, and it also opens up a new map for the war to continue.
The maps include the deserts of Indar, the frozen wastelands of Essamir, the humid looking jungles of Hossin and the relatively normal looking grass world of Amerish and each one offers a truly unique experience.
They're also really big, you wouldn't want to have to run from one end to another on foot as I reckon it'd take you half an hour or more. Thankfully there's ground and air vehicles to make travelling abit easier, or you can just deploy straight into the action by hitting J, or insert to deploy directly on your squad leader.
One of the things I like most about Planetside 2 is how easy it is to just jump in and get right into the action. You can customize your characters armor and camo from a wide selection of gear and you can switch weapon loadouts easily either in the spawn screen or at weapon terminals dotted around each base... Too long, doesn't fit :(
