Today's game has the wonderful name It Came from the Desert and was released in 1989 by the US studio Cinemaware for the good old Amiga. A PC version followed later, but it's best to steer clear of that. Cinemaware was known for its... well... cinematic games that attempted to make the feel of classic films interactive. Like Defender of the Crown, released in '86.

In any case, the studio wanted to capture the flair of 1950s B-movies with It Came from the Desert. So, cheap effects, exaggerated drama, and monstrous ants were included. The idea was bold, as it was a real-time game in which you played a geologist in a desert town, collecting clues, warning the population, and simultaneously fighting gigantic ants. A mix of adventure, action, and strategy that was meant to give the impression of being in the middle of the action, rather than just watching. The strength of It Came from the Desert lay less in its perfect technology than in its atmosphere, cheesy presentation, and charming trash feel, which made it a gem on the Amiga for good reason.
