Judgement Silversword: Rebirth Edition Game Sample - WonderSwan Color
This is JS:RE (ジャッジメント・シルバーソード リバースエディション), based on the Wonder Witch (A WonderSwan game development tool) 2001 game contest game titled "Judgement Silversword". JS was developed by a fellow named "M-KAI" and it won the contest and "Qute", a game publisher, published the game and made it official, renaming it JS:RE for the WonderSwan Color/ SwanCrystal. The game is said to be influenced by Radiant Silvergun and it is one of the few shooters for the WonderSwan handheld.
It's a pretty cool game (played vertically rather than horizontally) if you're into bullet-hell shooters, though the premise is pretty simple. You have two types of shots; a spread shot to take out waves of weak enemies and a concentrated straight shot for strong enemies. You also have a shield to protect you from shots. The shield gets weaker as your percent goes from 100 to zero. If you are aiming for the highest score possible, you can also use the shield to destroy enemies (oddly, I don't hear too many people mention this), so it's like a third weapon. Using the shield gives you a ton of multipliers, so it's best (and very dangerous) to use the shield to defeat enemies and finish off bosses. There's no screen-clearing bombs or such, but there is several extends (AKA 1-ups). There are over 30 areas to fight in...if you do well.
The visuals are decent, and the music...well, it ain't nothing to write home about. Limited and repetitive. However, since areas are short and the music switches back and forth, it's tolerable. The game can be addictive, even though I've never been a huge fan of bullet-hell shooters...this one is intense at times, but also realistic. I've played my fair share of ridiculous BH games and this one is an excellent balance.
However, buying it is mostly out of the question; it's definitely not worth what it currently goes for, imo. You may also want to know that an alternate version of this game has been released as freeware called "Cardinal Sins: Recycle Edition". It is also known as "Judgement Silversword: Recycle Edition". However, since there is no known emulator to play Wonder Witch .FX files that are in color, I think you need an actual Wonder Witch to play it...which would be okay if they didn't cost an arm and a leg. I'd like to make a small video for that too...guess I'll try making WonderWitch game samples for B&W Wonder Witch games instead. This will be the last WS/WSC video for now.
