Kerbal Space Program 0.9 Career 26
We are back with more Kerbal Space Program 0.9 Career mode with just about 6 days left until KSP 1.0 comes out! We are currently on out way to Minmus with the hopes of earning enough funds to fully upgrade the R&D center before 1.0 comes out.
We start off in orbit around Kerbin on our way back to Minmus. We perform an initial burn of about 925 m/s to get out to Minmus and then about 15 minutes later we have another burn of about 190 m/s to correct our inclination, as Minmus will be above the normal orbital plane when we get there. We then coast for about 4 days out to Minmus.
As we get in Minmus's influence, we aren't coming in at a good angle to meet up with the station, so we perform another burn orbit in the correct direction, which is about 325 m/s (looking back, this could have been done much more efficiently). Once we get to periapsis, we then do a 500 m/s burn to circularize our orbit and wind up in an orbit that is very close to the station's.
We are behind the station, so we go into a small orbit than it, and catch up in about 2 orbits, with a small correction to get withing 500 meters. At that point, we stop relative to it, and head directly towards it about about 3 m/s. We switch to the station, and aim it's docking port toward the ship, and then switch back. We use the RCS to keep on target, and it take a few minutes, but we successfully dock!
We transfer fuel into the lander, so that it is full, and leave the spare tank 1/2 full. We then attempt to decouple the spare tank, but it doesn't fully come away, similar to the issue we had last time. It appears that the engines that hang down past the start of the spare tank wind up gripping it somewhat, preventing them from easily coming apart. This is happening with this lander design, but didn't seem to happen with the lander we took to the Mun, which had 4 engines.
We briefly fire the engines on the station, to attempt to torque the sections apart. It somewhat works, and with a bit of additional rocking back and forth using SAS and RCS, we are able to get the ship away from the station.
We then plan a route to the first landing site. We do a small burn to change our inclination so it passes over the site, will also lowering our orbit under 8 km, so we can run the RAPIER engine test that we have. Se take a crew report to fulfill a gather science contract, and broadcast it back to Kerbin. Once we are under 8 km, we decouple the satellite, and fire it's engine, completing that contract.
We then plan a maneuver to land at the site we need the seismic readings at. We slow down and start coming down over the landing site. We thing we are coming straight down, but our NAV ball is still set to orbital mode instead of surface, so we actually drift away. After correcting the NAV ball, we re-enter the area, and as we come down, we are actually within two areas at the same time! We land, and take a seismic reading, and it actually covers both area, saving us a trip to another area. While we are here, we gather reading from all our other instruments, as we are in a slopes biome, which we haven't been in before.
This has been a bit of a long episode, but we got a lot done even though we ran into some issues. Come back next time wen we will hopefully complete the contracts that we have, and maybe earn enough funds to unlock the third level of the R&D center!
