Kerbal Space Program 0.9 Career 25
I'm back playing more Kerbal Space Program Career mode. In this episode we take some readings on Kerbin, and then head back to Minmus!
We start of in Mission Control and take a look at the contracts that we have and the available ones. It turns out that having just come back from Minmus, there are several contracts for exploring Minmus. So we take two contracts for seismic surveys on Minmus, and one for general science around Minmus, and one for testing a rapier engine. In the process we max out the number of contracts we can take at once, so we upgrade Mission Control to level three for 200k funds so we no longer have a limit on the number of funds.
However, we are first going to complete a survey here on Kerbin. We head to the spaceplane hanger, and modify one of our planes for this mission, as it has to land multiple times. We add some ladders and seismic accelerometers and adjust the parachutes.
We get a pilot aboard, take off and head north to the locations we need to collect data at. Once near, we slow down and fly low, but the ground doesn't appear smooth enough to land at, so we pop the parachutes. We come down slowly, but mostly tail first, however we do land safely. We get out and take the surface sample that we need, but getting back in turns out to be an issue. Elsen can climb up the ladder, but can't seem to get on top of the wing to get back in. So we decide to recover Elsen and the plane, and try again.
Back in the hanger, we modify the parachute locations, and change out the ladders for the longer ones, and arrange them so they will be on a slope allowing the pilot to get on top of the plane. We take off again, and fly to the second location. Again, we use the parachutes to land, and this time we are more more level, although still a bit nose high.
We get the reading that we need, and then we drive the plane to the next location, as we can't repack the parachutes. We get the data we need at this location, and then head for the final location. As we approach the final location we are heading a bit down hill, and maybe a bit quick, at about 34 m/s. We apply the breaks, and the plane tilts forward and to the left and this knocks off the cockpit and breaks a few other parts, but Thompzon survives, and is able to collect the data we need for the contract.
Back at KSC, we begin planning for our return to Minmus. We take our previous rocket and remove the station that it carried. We already have a station in orbit, and this will reduce our weight allowing us to get there with more fuel. However, this time we will need to land at 8 locations, so the spare fuel take we bring along has been modified with a docking port, so we can attach it to the station so we can return there to refuel if needed. Finally, we modify the satellite on our nose to have a rapier engine so we can complete that contract.
We get our crew together, and launch this rocket. Everything goes well, and we get into Kerbin orbit with plenty of fuel left in the final launch stage. We then plan a transfer to Minmus, but that will be left for the next episode!
