Kerbal Space Program Moho Probe Part1
Hi, guys, I'm back with some more Kerbal Space Program, this time I'm sending a probe to Moho and to gather near Sun science.
We launch with the same launcher and probe as we sent to Eve. This time however, we will be sending it closer to the sun, so we attempt to give it as big of a delta-v boost from Kerbin as we can.
We are able to get on a trajectory that will take us very near Moho's orbit, so we undock the probe, extend it's panels and sent it on it's way. This, however, has left our manned launcher on a path out of Kerbin's orbit. We fire our engines and manage to reduce our orbit enough so that we will be at apoapsis in about 2 hours. Once at apoapsis, we do a small burn to raise our periapsis to about 40 km. This is because we know that KSC won't be under our periapsis, but we do want to slow in the atmosphere, and reduce our apoapsis.
We do slow down, but exit the atmosphere, reducing our orbital period by about half. This is fantastic, ans it will put KSC very near our new periapsis. Once at apoapsis again, we do another small burn to reduce our periapsis to about 25 km, so that we are sure to get slowed down enough to be captured.
Everything goes mostly according to plan, and we com down over the ocean just west of KSC, which is just a bit earlier than planned. Once we get down to about 15 km, we start our jet engines and start flying the 100 or so KM back to KSC. Everything is going well, and we cross the mountains just west of KSC preparing to land when disaster strikes!
At about 6 km up and about 26 km from KSC, just after throttling the engine back from full, some kind of structural issue caused the left wing to detach from the aircraft. Bill and Jeb struggled to regain control of the craft, but with asymmetric thrust and lift, the craft was impossible to fly. The impacted that ground going 171 m/s about 20 km from KSC. There were no survivors.
We will remember them, and continue on with the mission next time.
