Kid Chameleon High Scores - Lion's Den (23,330 Points) [WR]
This is exactly the strategy that you will see being used during the single-segment highscore run, just like The Valley of Life. It contains five critical times of 5:51, 5:51, 8:44, 8:44, and 8:33. In addition, while it's possible to complete this level without using any invulnerability, I advise to enter it with at least one handy.
Right at the start, you're going to want to fly by continuously flipping Skycutter over the chasm, and try to head in a straight path. Use the boundary between the green and purple background colors as a guide for which altitude to stay at. As soon as you see the first iron blocks, you're going to want to flip right-side up, such that you land on the third row of blocks. Continue right into the mountainside. You will soon come up to a set of five prize blocks; the fifth one contains a clock. It's a little hard to collect quickly because of the inconvenient cave geometry. What I do is head all the way to the right until I hit the wall, rear back while spamming the jump button, and as soon as Skycutter taps the block with his head, I go back to the right. Wait on the telepad for the clock to fall, and as soon as it does, go to the left just enough to collect it, *without leaving contact with the telepad*. You should collect the clock at 5:51, and immediately be transported by the telepad.
Since there's only one clock in this level, we're going to need to collect the same one again, due to it being respawned every time a telepad is taken. The telepad will place you at the top of the cave you were just in, so simply head back to the left and once reaching the iron blocks, repeat the process to reach the clock and telepad at 8:44.
This time, jump shortly after reappearing and use a round of invulnerability just before colliding with the Lion. It's so much easier to go through him than over him, yet possible both ways. Jump over (and flip if necessary) over the next three platforms you can land on the next long row of shooter blocks. At the very end of this chain, you want to get a large jump at the last moment possible so that you can fit into the space between a prize block and some statues, in order to progress to the next section without time loss.
Glide down the step-like hill as Skycutter until the bottom. If you aren't holding right at this point, do so now. At the very bottom of this slope, you will notice a couple of trees in the immediate background. After passing the trunk of the second tree, you want to flip upwards *while holding right*, or else it won't work properly. The moment Skycutter touches the top row of iron blocks, you need to let go of the right button, to increase vertical velocity from this point onwards. If done correctly, you should land on the next column of statues. Right after falling off, flip again while still not holding right, and you should land on the next statue column. Repeat again, but go back to holding right at the minimum height of your flip, and this should guide you perfectly to the flag.
In the single segment highscore run, this level is a run killer, because there's no other way to start this level as Skycutter. Will I be able to acquire the maximum score on this level during the real run? We will find out soon enough...
