Kid Chameleon High Scores - Secrets in the Rocks (57,420 Points) [WR]
Now here's a record I'm really proud of, along with my records for Boomerang Bosses, Cliffs of Illusion, and The Crypt: the hardest levels to highscore in the game, in my opinion. The entirety of this level is jam-packed with technical movement, traversing through what are definitely the most difficult terrain geometries in the game. Unfortunately, there are no useful clocks in this level to help buffer the timer at all. It is straight-up a game of speed as far as this level goes. To prepare, make sure you come into the level as Skycutter with 40-49 diamonds.
The madness begins at the very start of the level. You need to be holding the B, C, and Right buttons, such that you will flip upside-down when starting. When the incline to the right is hit almost immediately, let go of all those buttons, and hold left while using a round of invulnerability. Our goal is to rise up, so be sure not to hold the A button too long when activating invulnerability, as it will prevent Skycutter from bypassing both pairs of prize blocks above him.
If successfully bypassed, rise up for a considerable distance, and just before hitting the top margin, flip back right-side up. In the upper-left corner of the level, you will have revealed a prize block. This block actually contains 10,000 points, so you'd better collect this one.* To do so, flip upside-down again to gain vertical momentum, and then flip right-side up once more to actually trigger the prize block and collect the 10,000 points! A more ideal collection process of this prize is to assume a right directional just before collecting the prize. This will allow you to collect the 10,000 points on the right side of the block, and actually land on a row of rock blocks, which serves as the passageway into the next area.
*It is important to note that you can actually collect 10,000 points prizes without losing your "No Prize" Bonus, the only prize that this can be done with.
Lower your speed when descending off the rock blocks, so as to not hit the ghost blocks off to the right. Land on the dragon below, and do a very short hop off of him into the mountainside. One of the trickiest parts of the level is right here, where you have to get through this chamber without bouncing on the fireball. To do this, you have to do a short jump over the gap bordered by rock blocks, and sort of weeble-wobble your way to the other side without landing on the fireball. That enemy is RNG dependent, so be prepared for unexpected randomness! At a very precise moment (one to which I cannot 100% accurately locate), you can actually then jump and flip seamlessly through the stepped passageway beyond, but good luck getting the rhythm down for that. Due to how insanely hard it is for Skycutter to get through this type of geometry, being stopped in this area for a brief period should not be that time-costly.
You should now be on the ceiling in the next chamber. Flip down from it, following the left margin of the column downwards. Slightly after the top of the left landform has disappeared above the screen, move to the right for a few seconds, using your second invulnerability at about this time.
You will soon come up to a series of five rock block columns. You want to ascend up between the second and third columns and be able to break through the two rock blocks that you will soon encounter above you. An odd thing you need to watch out for is that the physics of the rock blocks in this area are quite odd - they seem to have the same sideways interactions as platforms would (includes things such as midair Skycutter attractions, and entryway exclusions). Because of this, you will need to regulate your Skycutter speed by pressing/letting go of the right button. When Skycutter is rising, let go of the right button to maximize vertical speed, and when you're approaching a 2-block height gap, press the right button to slow your vertical speed. Follow these aforementioned rules to follow the rock-block maze into the next mountain section.
This is *BY FAR* the hardest part of the level. It's the same deal as the diagonal stepped passageway seen earlier, except this one extends a much longer distance, making the chances of passing through it seamlessly almost zero. However, you can see in the video that I got the absolute perfect transition through the passageway. Absolutely no horizontal momentum was lost, and all upward momentum I had was redirected downward when I collided with the iron block, allowing me to reach the flag, barely qualifying for a 2:42.
It's a tough level to get 57,420 points on. 57,410 points is quite a magnitude easier to get, because every slight little stop you have costs you frames that add up in the end. Upon further analysis, I may actually consider this level to be harder than The Crypt, but it is a close battle. Either way, it's a sweet record that probably has potential to be overtaken by another second, if anyone out there is willing to be a challenger!!!
