Kid Icarus Uprising - this is why panic button Powers need a creative countering rule
This match was originally intended to be a No Power Run, until the human opponent got Daybreak as the Angel and it was refusing to be rooted off, at which point I was just keeping Super Speed at the ready. I needed only 3 charges to win by time out. The only reason this was anywhere close was because I didn't use Super Armor during the encounter with the DB usage and go back to having Super Speed ready. Super Armor would have cut the Daybreak damage by 30%, eliminating ANY question of the outcome. It should be noted that Daybreak is already a reason to ban items, which is, again, why I used Super Speed to begin with.
Some time back, I did a table of Spaces Per Charge for Powers capable of thwarting Black Hole's burst damage support usage. Super Speed is, of course, among them, providing immediate vacuum immunity, and its Spaces Per Charge values are 3 at L1, 2.34 at L2, 2 at L3, and 1.8 at L4. That's actually better than Warp with the higher levels, with Super Speed L3 even beating out Warp L4, and it's not hard to preserve charges. Contradicting leveled Slip Shot thanks to the full line cost may hinder offense with reduced psychological threat ability, but it doesn't change the potential defense that can be exploited. Oh, and don't think Interference will be an incredible help, because it will be up against Spin Shot usage allowing for distance maintenance.
Of course, banning Super Speed outright would not only not do anything to other Powers that could pull similar results, but cut off a useful way of addressing defensive play. Something more creative would have to be done.
Here is a rule I would propose for competitive play with some add-ons:
-Certain Powers would be Restricted. If a Power is Restricted, it has to be revealed to the opponent before play, along with 5 Spaces worth of non-Restricted Powers. Both/all involved Powers would also have to have their Levels revealed before play.
-Jump Glide exception: Jump Glide would be Restricted with the Tribute being 10 Spaces minus twice its Level.
-If a non-Restricted Power provides full damage invincibility on usage (this applies for Trade-Off, Playing Dead, or any Power with a casting animation), discount from its Space count 1 less than the Power's highest Level charge count for the purposes of the reveal tribute. Spite is treated as a 3 Charge Power providing full damage invincibility despite its drawbacks.
-In the event of usage of multiple Restricted Powers, a non-Restricted Power may be tributed for only ONE Restricted Power. Exceptions below.
-Explosive Flame, Black Hole, Autoreticle, Power Thief, Spite, and the Zodiac Powers may each be tributed for a maximum number of Restricted Powers equal to their given Level. Heavenly Light above Level 1 may be tributed for one less than its Level. Each subsequent tribute of a Power will count for 3 Spaces less than the previous. (Black Hole L4 would simply not be allowed to be tributed a 4th time.)
It's obviously complicated, but it would be better than an extreme in trying to handle this mess.
