Secret of Evermore - Self-Imposed Challenge Run Part 1: Surviving the strange world
Rules so far:
-No switching to the Dog in an active combat area unless absolutely necessary
-Dog must not be dropped to 0 HPs
Rule explanation:
-Dog switching limitations - there are some shenanigans that can be pulled while manually controlling the Dog. Obviously, I want to ban these indirectly. Limiting switching cuts the knot with an immersive way of playing. In a town, I would want to switch to the Dog so as to listen to extra dialogue. Also, if the combat area is basically cleared out, the banned exploits aren't a problem and I would just save myself tedium of Sniffing for hidden items.
-Dog survival - yeah, like this is a surprise at this point. And for reference, the Boy's survival is forced--his being reduced to 0 HPs is an automatic Game Over.
Secret of Evermore is an action RPG by Square USA based off of Secret of Mana, which is why (who else) RoahmMythril is interested in doing an LP of it, even having it on his most recent Let's Vote list. My vote was for SoE because why not, and if you're wondering, Startropics would have been my second choice. Of course, RoahmMythril will no doubt go with the whatever works approach since he's been doing that with SoM. I'm going to go with my usual approach because no doubt that will unearth buried gameplay involved in the adventures of a boy and his dog in the strange world presented.
This part is just the starting stuff. There isn't too much to talk about yet, beyond how I don't have more active rules set up yet, despite using the SoE Wikia to set up math tables in an effort to have a plan of attack for doing the Self Imposed Challenge. Most of the future rules won't be relevant to this part anyway. The only thing worth caring about in this part is the Raptor fight, and well? Relevant video:

Basically, camp around the shaking bush for the first 3 Raptors, and then just camp near the center with steady reaction for the final Raptor. I'm just not interested in losing this fight, but if you do lose, you actually won't get a Game Over; the dog will just drag the boy to the safety of the village's Inn.
Oh, and for reference, the damage calculation for physical attacks, unless there are exceptions I am not aware of, is as follows:
((ATK x 3...4)/3 - DEF / 4) x 3/4 rounded nearest
Yep, the game does use subtraction defense, though DEF is basically neutered and so the game has to use much bigger numbers for DEF to make sure it's relevant.
