KSP First Contract 17
0We are back in Kerbal Space Program First Contract, sending a rescue mission to the Mun.
We start off in the VAB, making a few last modifications to the rocket to send to rescue Bob, Nelrie and Seefrey from their crash on the Mun. We add a few more RCS thrusters near the top of the lander, which should help with any potential tipping over issues, which is what cause the crash.
We launch without much issue, but have to use a bit of the orbiter's fuel to get into orbit, but that was to be expected with a heavier ship. We then plot a course for the Mun, and perform that burn when it is time. As we approach the Mun, the orbit show that we are going to miss, but that is apparently a small glitch that fixes itself shortly.
We end up in a much higher orbit this time, and so we have to correct our orbit's inclination, and then lower our orbit to rendezvous the the science orbiter. We do this so that we can refuel the orbiter with our remaining fuel. We perform the burns and get within 1/2 a kilometer of the science orbiter before undocking our fuel (making sure the rescue lander is topped off first). Since we are on the opposite side of the Mun from the stranded guys, we dock the remaining fuel with the science orbiter at this time, which is mostly uneventful.
We them plot a course for the stranded guys, and have the rescue lander perform the burn to get down to them. As we approach, we have to make some on the fly corrections, as we didn't account for the rotation of the surface, and we weren't heading for safe landing site. We finally get headed towards a decent landing spot toward the center of the crater they crashed in. We slow down, extending the landing legs and make a decent landing about 2 km from the crash site.
It will be a bit of a walk, but we will rescue the guys officially in the next episode!
