KSP First Contract 18
We are continuing the rescue from the Mun in this Kerbal Space Program First Contract video.
Last time, we landed the rescue ship about 2km from the crash site.
Nelrie is the first to head over, and he flys over to the rescue craft quickly and gets in the hitchhiker container. Bob then heads over, after grabbing all the science that they had collected, and he gets in the command pod with Jeb. Finally, Seefrey heads over and gets in the hitchhiker container with Nelrie.
We collect some science readings in this crater that we couldn't because of the crash, and then we plan a hop back over to the highlands to recover some of the science that was lost in the crash. We perform a burn to get us over to the highlands, and slow down and land about 1.3 km from our previous landing site. Jeb gets out and stretches his legs as we collect the science that was destroyed.
We are now read to head back to Kerbin, but we may be a bit low on fuel, so it is decided to return to the science orbiter to pick up a little fuel for our return trip. We are about on the other side of the Mun from the orbiter, and no longer under it's orbit, so we take off, get into a 30km orbit, and then adjust our orbit to match the science orbiter's as they cross. In addition to matching the orbit angle, we also raise the one side of our orbit to about 70 km, so that the science orbiter will catch up to use in a few orbits. After 2 orbits, we find that the science orbiter will pass us on the next orbit, so we adjust or orbit slightly so that we will end up 700 meters away after the next orbit.
At this point, we remotely control the fuel tanker that came up with the rescue ship, as it is now empty and is blocking the docking port on the science orbiter. It undocks and uses RCS to move away and deorbit itself. We watch via remote camera as it impacts one of the large craters on the Mun and break into pieces.
The rescue ship intercepts the science orbiter and matches orbit before proceeding towards the science orbiter's docking port. the science orbiter also aims itself toward the rescue ship, and docking is relatively uneventful. The rescue ship fills it's tanks about 1/3 full, and the plots an escape trajectory from the Mun.
the Mun escape burn is uneventful and leaves the rescue ship on a trajectory to enter Kerbin's atmosphere and go down to about 37 km. As we get close to entering the atmosphere, it seen that our periapsis will be near KSP, but over water making a water landing likely, which isn't desired. As there is land before the periapsis, a small burn is made to lower our periapsis so that we would be likely to land before it. It's lowered to 15km, however that turns out to be too much. we slow down before the land, and wind up heading for the water anyway. our parachutes do a good job of slowing us down though, and we come down under them at less than 7 m/s. under 100 meters, we fire up the engines slightly to slow us down to under 5 m/s and we land safely.
After recovering the ship, we find that we have over 2600 science and have recovered over 100000 funds from the rescue craft! While this won't complete the tech tree, it should allow is to unlock more than 1/2 the remaining tech, but that will be for the next episode!
