Kerbal Space Program First Contract 19
Playing some more Kerbal Space Program First Contract.
Now that we are back from the Mun, it is time to spend that science and take some new contracts.
We talk with Gene and pick up some new contracts, including two that involve aircraft.
We then go over to R&D to spend the science and unlock almost everything on the penultimate tech level, leaving only 3 to unlock there. We also pick up Very Heavy Rocketry in the last level so that making heavy lifters will be easier.
We then head over to the Spaceplane Hanger, which we haven't used before. We design a plane aimed at high altitude flight as one of the engine tests must be done at 20 km. It features 3 engines, two normal jets and one turbojet, as we must test both engine types. We also attach a pair of structural pylons for another contract test. Plenty of air intakes are added for high altitude flight.
We take off nicely and start heading up to altitude. We are able to test the turbojet after slowing down at altitude to be withing the speed requirement. The other test prove harder, as they are higher, but even slower. After a few failed attempts, we fly nearly straight up and cut out engines when the high point of our trajectory is near the height limit of the contract. The will be the point where we are going slowest, and hopefully be within all the parameters of the test. We attempt this, and once we are withing all the conditions, we stage. Unfortunately, staging drops the structural pylons, but we were looking at the conditions for the jet engine test. We regroup, and get the engine test done, and then head back for a near perfect landing on the runway!
We then plan a small rocket to do the pylon test, and test the large KR-2L rocket engine and the LV-N engines. We attach a small probe and launch this without parachutes as landing jsut the probe body is deemed not worth it.. We reach sub-orbital flight and achieve all the tests and begin watching the rocket fall back. We notice that we have about 10% fuel left which may be enough to get a safe landing. just a few km from the water, we fire the rockets to slow down. at about 100m we almost stop and attempt to lower ourselves down. We hit the water at about 5 m/s and safely bounce while cutting the engines! However, upon hitting the water again, the rocket breaks, destroying all parts.
