1Another rescue mission in Kerbal Space Program!
Today we are rescuing another Kerbal from orbit, as well as completing a few of the contracts we have. We design a ship with the tow man lander can, leaving one spot empty for Aldgee who we are rescuing. We also add a Mainsail engine and an ion engine to the orbiter part, to test in orbit to fulfill contracts. We add lights, as these rendezvous always seem to happen on the night side of the planet.
This is all put on top of a big orange tank with a skipper engine, which itself is attached to two KR-1x2 liquid boosters set up for asparagus staging, with 4 Rockomax solid fuel boosters for help at liftoff.
We launch the rescue mission, getting some science for testing a structural pylon early in the flight, but not everything goes smoothly. When it is time to disconnect the KR-1x2s, the decouplers don't push them away fast enough, but do cause them to rotate, so their tops hits the big orange tank and cause it to explode! Jeb is able to pilot the ship back to KSC, as we make some modifications are attempt a rescue again.
This time, with sepratrons on the KR-1x2s, things go much more smoothly. The KR-1x2s detack without incident at about 18 km, and Skipper engine gets us into orbit with about 10% fuel remaining. We take a few orbits and two small maneuvers, but we catch up to Aldgee, and get within 1.1 km of him, when he begins to head toward the rocket. He is able to get to the ship and board without issue.
We then run the remaining test on the engines to complete the contracts, and begin heading back to Kerbin. We are able to land on the KSC grounds, and get some shore seismic, pressure and temperature data after we land, although the ship partially dissembles.
