Let's Play Dawn of the Mexica - #1 - Quick Guide for Getting Started - Warrior - Aztec Roguelike
Let's play Dawn of the Mexica (pronounced meh-SHEE-kah), a game that has captured my imagination and interest for interweaving mesoamerican culture with roguelike game play in a similar vein to Nethack, Caves of Qud, and many other modern entries to the genre. Death is permanent and plenty, but in this first episode I try to show you the way to at least kick start your run in the right direction. I don't play it perfectly and will probably look back on this and laugh at the mistakes I've made. But this game is so obscure that Twitch and IGDB didn't even have it listed the first time I streamed it -- so in a way I get to enjoy cutting through the game without the benefit of a guide or watching other runners go before me. As someone who has not beaten any of the above mentioned roguelikes, it is going to be a tall task. Let's go along the journey together.
Want some quick tips for getting started? I'll make a shorter, more "tip" focused video later, but the run down is this 1) raid the village for gear, 2) don't run too far ahead on the map and get surrounded, 3) eat water lilies for light when you can 4) remember that enemies can hear, see, and smell you, 5) take your time and think about tough spots, 6) don't forget about usable items in your inventory, 7) pay attention to weapon durability, 8) use the idle button (comma) to let enemies come to you. I'm sure there will be more, but that's a basic run down.
Dawn of the Mexica is a brutally difficult traditional Roguelike where you must journey from your village to the underworld in an effort to find out why Huitzilopochtli, the Sun God, has not risen. The game will take you from forest jungels to catacombs all the way to the fabled city of Tenochtitlan. Do you have what it takes to cut through a game steeped in Aztec lore? The game is available on Steam and well worth your time:
