Doom II is like a comfortable pair of slippers for me, of which I’m happy to say that I currently possess. Playing it not only conjures forth nostalgic memories of be playing through this game in my youth, it’s also just great fun. Sure, the gameplay doesn’t get more complicated then killing enemies to get to areas where you have to kill more enemies and so on, but it’s so well constructed that almost every encounter is an interesting one, not to mention there are a slew of new enemies to get used to. Since this was the first game in the series I encountered, these new enemies weren’t so new to me compared to someone who’d played through the original first, but they were no less challenging.

Originally I played through the game on the lowest difficulty and for thirteen year old me, that was quite a challenge indeed. I’ve no idea when the jump in difficulty happened for me, but I don’t think I really played any of the ones between the lowest and ultra violence, my go-to difficult setting these days. I’ve given Nightmare a few tries but those glimpses into that mode were brief; not only is it absurdly difficult and unfair, I don’t find that mode fun at all and for me, Doom II is all about having fun.
